Camp Judaea Experience

Our 58th Season

Established in 1961, Camp Judaea is a small, Jewish, Israel-centered summer camp for boys and girls ages 7-15 nestled on 123 acres in beautiful Hendersonville, North Carolina.

At Camp Judaea we offer a wide variety of exceptionally fun activities in a loving family atmosphere. Our activities include horseback riding, farming, basketball, softball, volleyball, flag football, ultimate frisbee, archery, visual arts, cooking, pottery, metalwork, singing, dancing, drama, campouts, field trips, swimming, boating, tennis, special teen trips to New York & Washington, DC, backpacking and so much more. Our philosophy centers around five developmental “pillars”: Israel, Judaism, Nature, Community and Individual Growth.

Camp Judaea’s smaller scale encourages campers to explore, learn and grow as individuals while being surrounded by unconditional love and acceptance. We know and understand each child individually and embrace them in a caring summer family where life-long friendships are nurtured. Total camp enrollment averages around only 250 campers per session.

We offer a pluralistic Jewish community that celebrates the diversity of Jewish life around the world. We bring together campers and staff from every denomination, from “Just Jewish” to modern Orthodox. Our campers are immersed in a vibrant Jewish, Israel-centered environment where they learn to respect one another, celebrate each other’s strengths, offer encouragement, lend support and work as a team.

Our program fosters strong connections with the land of Israel through extraordinarily fun programs featuring music, dance, arts, scout-craft and other cultural activities under the dynamic leadership of a large contingent of talented Israeli staff.

Creative peer-led daily services and delicious kosher food are hallmarks of our trans-denominational Young Judaea community. A fun and relaxing Shabbat amidst the natural splendor of our camp is one of the highlights of each camper’s summer experience. We offer a rich combination of traditional summer camp electives, sports, aquatics and Israel cultural activities for all campers to enjoy.

Inclusion at Camp Judaea

Camp Judaea embodies the values, policies, and practices that support the right of every child, regardless of ability, to participate as full members of our community. Our program, and our commitment to serving children with a range of needs, continues to evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of our community.

We invite and welcome all campers, who can be successful in a group living environment. We strive to understand the needs of every camper and work hard to ensure that campers of varying abilities are given every opportunity to participate and thrive in an inclusive environment while promoting fun, learning, and new experiences. Each campers' talents and qualities are contributing factors that help build a sense of community, equally valuing every camper, while still preserving the group cabin experience for all. Our goal at Camp Judaea is to support all campers to participate in activities to the best of their ability, share meals in a group setting, and develop strong peer-to-peer relations for a lifetime of friendship. We make an extra effort to teach our campers, through experience, what it means to be part of an inclusive Jewish community. The principle of kol yisrael arevim zeh lazeh (all of Israel is responsible for one another) guides us as we strive to include a place for each individual camper to succeed at camp. We believe that inclusion is good for everyone – kids with and without disabilities, families, staff, and our entire community.

All counselors are trained in our inclusion philosophy and on making camp inclusive. Our Inclusion Director floats among groups at camp to provide support to campers and staff when and where it is needed. We plan all of our programming with inclusion in mind. Many of these adjustments benefit ALL our campers, such as balancing competitive activities with cooperative ones, providing options, and giving simple and clear directions. Please contact us if you have questions about whether or not Camp Judaea is the right place for your child
